This image shows the Orion Nebula (Messier 42) and the nearby Running Man Nebula (NGC 1977) — both part of one of the closest and most active star-forming regions in our galaxy, located about 1,350 light-years from Earth.
The glowing reds and purples in Orion come from hydrogen gas energized by intense ultraviolet radiation from massive newborn stars in the Trapezium cluster. That energy causes the gas to fluoresce, revealing intricate filaments, shock fronts, and sculpted dust lanes. These dark brown structures are dense molecular clouds, the raw material for future stars and planetary systems.
Above Orion sits the bluish Running Man Nebula, a reflection nebula where nearby stars illuminate surrounding dust rather than ionizing it. The dust preferentially scatters blue light, producing the soft blue glow seen in the image — similar to how sunlight scatters in Earth’s atmosphere.
